Philip Roth was an American novelist whose work intensely explored themes such as Jewish identity, sexual desire, and the individual’s place in American society. He first became known in the 1950s with the collection Goodbye, Columbus and achieved widespread notoriety with Portnoy’s Complaint, a book that established his style of intimate, ironic, and often transgressive monologue. Over decades, Roth combined literary tradition with influences like Kafka and Freud to create problematic, multifaceted narrators, most notably his alter ego Nathan Zuckerman, who appears in several works. In the 1990s he published the acclaimed “American trilogy,” which includes American Pastoral, a title that earned him the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Recognized with national and international awards — including the Man Booker International and honors such as the PEN/Nabokov and multiple National Book Awards — Roth also had his works collected by the Library of America during his lifetime, a rare distinction for contemporary authors. His legacy endures in the renewed discourse on the Jewish‑American experience and in his influence on generations of writers.
