Philipp Melanchthon, born Philipp Schwarzerdt, was a central figure of the Lutheran Reformation and a prominent German humanist. A close collaborator of Martin Luther, he drafted the Augsburg Confession (1530) and, after Luther’s death, became the movement’s leading intellectual, shaping its theological and institutional foundations.
Trained in the humanities and having translated his surname into Greek, Melanchthon also became notable as an educator: he organized and reformed schooling and university education in Germany and was called the Praeceptor Germaniae. He established an experimental school and produced manuals and pedagogical works that influenced instruction through the eighteenth century.
Beyond theology — including New Testament commentaries and works such as the Loci communes — he published on moral philosophy, psychology, and natural science, writing on the Copernican system and producing a paraphrase of Ptolemy’s Tetrabiblos. His ideas about natural law and the use of reason later influenced the Enlightenment.
His legacy endures in Lutheran confessions and institutions and in the German educational system, where his work shaped generations of scholars, civil servants, and preachers.
