Philippe Martinez is a French metallurgical technician and trade union leader, best known for serving as general secretary of the Confédération générale du travail (CGT) from 2015 to 2023. He began at Renault as a technician in 1982 and rose through the CGT leadership: central delegate, then general secretary of the Metalworkers’ Federation (2008), and member of the confederation’s executive committee (2013). In 2015 he was elected to lead the CGT, a position he consolidated after the 2016 congress and in which he was reappointed in 2019. During his term, Martinez adopted a combative stance against liberal reforms and restructuring plans, coordinating major mobilizations — strikes on the railways, refinery blockades and actions in the nuclear sector — and positioning the CGT as a leading voice of opposition to the “loi Travail” project. He advocated policies such as reducing the workweek to 32 hours, raising the minimum wage and retirement at 60, and criticized the payment of dividends. His leadership brought internal changes at the CGT: he has been identified as the first general secretary of the confederation without affiliation to the Communist Party since the mid-20th century and the first leader to emerge from a technician background rather than from the ranks of factory workers. After announcing his departure in 2022, he left the general secretariat in 2023 and briefly returned to employment in the automotive industry.
