Philo Taylor Farnsworth was an American inventor and a television pioneer who received the first U.S. patent awarded for television technology. He developed the camera tube known as the image dissector and designed the first fully electronic television system, replacing the mechanical devices of the time. From 1938 to 1951 he marketed receivers and cameras through the Farnsworth Television and Radio Corporation.
Over his career he amassed roughly 300 patents, mainly in radio and television, and was involved in priority disputes that marked the shift to the era of electronic image transmission. His work enabled the first transmissions of human images and public demonstrations that established the electronic format as dominant.
Late in life Farnsworth returned to innovation in physics by designing an electrostatic confinement reactor, the so-called Farnsworth Fusor, useful as a neutron source though impractical for commercial power generation. His technical legacy influenced later approaches to fusion and made a lasting contribution to the development of electronic broadcasting.
