Phyllida Ann Law OBE is a Scottish actress with a long career in British theatre, film and television. Trained at the Bristol Old Vic School, she became known for roles in classic series such as Dixon of Dock Green and Rumpole of the Bailey, as well as appearances in television adaptations of literary works. On film, she appeared in notable productions including Peter's Friends (1992), Much Ado About Nothing (1993) and The Winter Guest (1997), often sharing the screen with her daughter Emma Thompson.
On stage, she was in the original London cast of La Cage aux Folles at the London Palladium in 1986, showing range across comedy and drama. She has also taken part in productions for young audiences and audio dramas tied to the Doctor Who universe, and held recurring roles in contemporary series such as Kingdom and Foyle's War.
The author of memoirs addressing family relationships and eldercare, Law has received honorary doctorates from Glasgow Caledonian University and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. In 2014 she was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to the arts and to charity, affirming a steady acting career and institutional recognition.
