Piero Sraffa was an Italian political economist whose academic and intellectual career had a lasting impact on debates over the theory of value and distribution. A professor at Cambridge, he challenged key assumptions of neoclassical theory; his major work, Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities, is regarded as the founding text of the neo-Ricardian school, reviving and reinterpreting classical issues of production, costs, and rents.
Before his academic consolidation, Sraffa was active publicly and intellectually in interwar Italy: trained under Luigi Einaudi, he participated in socialist circles and maintained a close friendship with Antonio Gramsci, whom he supported during Gramsci’s imprisonment. His early analyses, published in the 1920s, criticized the presumed symmetry between supply and demand and questioned the use of marginal cost curves under real economic conditions.
In his writings on returns to scale and costs, Sraffa argued that different sources of increasing and decreasing returns make partial-equilibrium explanations—that attempt to derive prices by a simple intersection of supply and demand—fragile; he placed emphasis instead on production costs and the relationships between sectors.
His academic legacy influenced heterodox currents and reopened debate on the foundations of value theory, serving as a reference for scholars interested in alternatives to marginalism and in a renewed engagement with the Ricardian tradition.
