Pierre Barouh was a French singer, songwriter, lyricist and producer whose career moved between popular song and encounters with Brazilian music. He became internationally known for his work on Claude Lelouch’s film A Man and a Woman (1966), in which he acted and wrote/performer lyrics for Francis Lai’s soundtrack, a project that helped establish his prominence in French culture of the 1960s.
Born in Paris to a family of Turkish–Jewish origin, his childhood experiences during World War II and his discovery of bossa nova at the end of the 1950s influenced his repertoire and musical sensibility. Author of hits such as “La Plage” and “Tes dix‑huit ans”, Barouh also worked in journalism and sports before devoting himself entirely to music.
In 1965 he founded the Saravah label, a space for experimentation and exchange between styles and artists—an initiative that made him an important cultural figure by supporting names like Brigitte Fontaine, Jacques Higelin and Nana Vasconcelos. Although he faced management problems and financial losses, his artistic legacy endures in fostering musical encounters and promoting bossa nova in France.
Barouh maintained an occasional presence in film and on record over the decades, leaving a body of work defined by a blending of influences and by his role as a cultural mediator between France and Brazil.
