Pierre Lagaillarde was a French lawyer and deputy known for his activism in favor of keeping Algeria French during the war of independence (1954–1962). A central figure in the May 1958 events, he helped provoke the uprising that precipitated the Fourth Republic’s crisis and Charles de Gaulle’s rise; he then became a member of Algiers’s Committee of Public Safety. He served a short parliamentary term as a representative of Algiers until his mandate was revoked in 1961.
In January 1960 Lagaillarde also led the so‑called “week of the barricades,” a suppression that led to his arrest and later exile to Spain. In Madrid he joined, with Jean‑Jacques Susini and General Raoul Salan, the circles that gave rise to the OAS — the clandestine organization opposed to Algerian independence — and was convicted of rebellion in absentia.
Later settled among the French expatriate community on the Spanish coast, he lived several years in exile until benefiting from the 1968 amnesty and returning to France. He resumed his law practice in Auch, in the Gers, where he again took part in local civic activities, though he did not resume a national political career. His life remains associated with the role of the Pieds‑Noirs and the political and military crises that marked Algerian decolonization.
