Pierre Levegh, the racing name of Pierre Eugène Alfred Bouillin, was a French driver and sportsman known for his versatility in sports such as ice hockey, tennis, and sailing before turning to motorsport in 1937. He adopted his racing name in honor of his uncle Alfred Velghe and built a career in sports car racing and Grand Prix events, becoming a familiar figure on the French and international circuits after World War II. In the postwar years he distinguished himself at the wheel of Talbot, earning podiums in major races and taking part in the Formula One World Championship in 1950–1951. In sports car competition he gained a reputation for endurance and independence: at the 1952 24 Hours of Le Mans he drove almost the entire race solo, leading until a mechanical failure cost him victory in the closing stages. In 1955 he was recruited by the official Mercedes team for that year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans. In the crash that defined that event, his Mercedes 300 SLR collided with and exploded against the barrier separating the circuit from the grandstands, killing him and causing a catastrophic loss of life among spectators—the deadliest disaster in motorsport history. The official inquiry treated the episode as a racing accident; later documentaries and studies cleared him of personal blame. Levegh left a complex legacy: acknowledged for his bravery and skill behind the wheel, he is remembered both for his racing career and for his role in one of the sport’s most tragic chapters; he is buried in Père‑Lachaise Cemetery and has a street in Le Mans named after him.
