Pierre Seel was a French man whose personal experience became a singular testimony to the persecution of homosexuals during World War II. Arrested in 1941 and sent to the Schirmeck-Vorbrück camp, he endured torture and humiliation; he survived extreme conditions and the loss of those close to him, experiences he later recounted publicly.
After his release, subject to conditions imposed by the Gestapo and silenced by his jailer, he lived for decades without making his story public. In subsequent years he became the only French victim to speak openly about deportation for homosexuality, helping to bring historical recognition to this chapter of Nazi repression in France.
His testimony gave visibility to a little-documented victimhood and helped integrate the experience of homosexuals into France’s collective memory of the Holocaust. Seel’s account is marked by the rawness of the episodes described and their emotional impact, and it is important both for studies of persecution based on sexual orientation and for the memory of the concentration camps.
