Pierre Teilhard de Chardin was a Jesuit priest, paleontologist, and French thinker whose work sought to integrate science, theology, and mysticism. He became known for his paleontological research in China, where he took part in excavations at the Zhoukoudian complex that contributed to the discovery of the fossils known as Peking Man. Author of hundreds of scientific and philosophical articles, he developed influential concepts such as the noosphere, in dialogue with Vladimir Vernadsky, and articulated a theistic evolutionary vision culminating in the hypothesis of the “Omega Point.” His ideas, which combined influences from Henri Bergson and a deep Christian spirituality, met an ambiguous reception: they drew admiration from some theologians and Catholic leaders and were later cited by popes in subsequent documents, while much of the community of evolutionary biologists responded with skepticism. During his lifetime several of his works were subject to control and censorship and, after his death, they became the focus of editorial and institutional disputes. Teilhard de Chardin’s legacy remains relevant to the dialogue between science and religion, inspiring studies in philosophical cosmology, evolutionary spirituality, and the relationship between humanity and the planet.
