Pieter Jelles Troelstra was a Dutch lawyer, journalist and socialist politician whose actions helped consolidate the labor movement in the Netherlands. Born in Friesland, he served as a member of parliament and became a central figure in the campaign for universal suffrage and the promotion of social legislation through reformist social democracy, cofounding the Social Democratic Workers' Party (SDAP) in 1894. As a lawyer he gained prominence by taking on class causes, notably the Hogerhuis case, which fueled accusations of social injustice and increased his standing among working people. He edited propaganda collections and participated actively in the socialist press, strengthening the political culture of the early twentieth‑century labor movement. His attempt to provoke an insurrection in November 1918, inspired by the Russian and German revolutions, failed and became known as “Troelstra’s mistake”; the episode damaged his immediate political influence but did not erase his legacy in the struggle for political rights and social reforms. He withdrew gradually from public life in the 1920s and devoted himself to his memoirs, which helped consolidate his image among workers. He remains an inspiring figure in the history of Dutch labor politics.
