Pietro Badoglio was an Italian army officer and a central political figure in the early decades of the 20th century. He built a solid military career during World War I and was involved in the Caporetto campaign, a pivotal episode for Italian forces. During the Fascist period he initially opposed the movement but eventually aligned with it, holding diplomatic and military posts, including serving as ambassador to Brazil in 1922.
At the end of 1936 he took command of Italian forces in the campaign in Ethiopia, where his orders included the use of poison gas—an action that marked his responsibility for the repressive practices of Italian colonial expansion. He later became Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces.
In 1943, after Mussolini’s fall prompted by the Grand Fascist Council, Badoglio led a provisional government and negotiated an armistice with the Allies on 8 September 1943, ending Italy’s military alliance with Nazi Germany. He remained in office until June 1944 and retired from public life after the war.
