Pietro Mascagni was an Italian composer closely associated with operatic verismo, the dramatic movement that renewed Italian opera at the end of the 19th century. He became famous at 26 with Cavalleria rusticana (1890), an internationally impactful work that established his reputation and marked an aesthetic turning point in the operatic repertoire.

Over the course of his career he wrote fifteen operas—among the best known are L’amico Fritz and Iris—alongside vocal and orchestral music, an operetta and scores for theatre and silent film. He also worked as a conductor and manager of musical institutions, holding posts such as director of the Liceo Rossini in Pesaro and of the Scuola Musicale Romana.

His output shows a variety of styles and collaborations with important librettists of his time; several of his works remained in the European repertoire, especially in Italy. Mascagni enjoyed great fame in his lifetime, touring internationally and influencing later generations through his dramatic language and sensitivity to theatrical realism.
