Pinchas Rosen, born Felix Rosenblüth in Berlin, was a jurist and statesman who played a central role in the formation of the State of Israel. Trained in law in Germany and a veteran of the First World War, he became involved early in European Zionism, serving as president of the Zionist Federation of Germany before emigrating to Palestine in 1926, where he worked as a lawyer and helped organize Central European immigrants. A key figure in the politics of the founding period, Rosen founded the New Aliyah Party and served on the committee that drafted the Declaration of Independence, being one of its signatories. He led the Progressive Party and was an influential figure in coalition negotiations in the early governments. Rosen was Israel’s first Minister of Justice, holding the office in several terms between 1948 and 1961. Known for intellectual integrity, he advocated judicial reforms, limits on the authority of rabbinical courts, and the adoption of a constitution. He maintained close relations with leaders such as David Ben‑Gurion, despite disagreements in episodes like the Lavon Affair. After party mergers and internal splits, he helped form the Independent Liberals and retired from politics in 1968. He received the Israel Prize in jurisprudence and was accorded a state funeral, leaving a legacy of institution-building and defense of the rule of law in Israel.
