Prince Alexander Mountbatten

Prince Alexander Mountbatten was a member of the British royal family, a grandson of Queen Victoria, known as the first Marquess of Carisbrooke. Trained in the military tradition of his time, he served in the Royal Navy and later with the Grenadier Guards, reaching the rank of captain during the First World War; he received allied honors, including the Russian Order of St. Vladimir. During the First World War he took part in the broad change of names and titles implemented by the British royal household, which led to adopting the surname Mountbatten and renouncing German titles. In 1917 he was granted the titles Marquess of Carisbrooke, Earl of Berkhamsted and Viscount Launceston. He married Lady Irene Denison and had a daughter, Iris. In the following years he combined public and private roles: during the Second World War he served in the Royal Air Force in staff positions, and after the war he became one of the first members of the royal family to work in the commercial sector, holding executive posts at companies such as Lever Brothers. He died in 1960 at Kensington Palace; with his death the marquessate of Carisbrooke became extinct. His career reflects the shift from Victorian nobility to institutional and professional roles in the twentieth century.
