Prince Maurice Battenberg was a member of the Hessian princely Battenberg family and the extended British royal family, being Queen Victoria’s youngest grandson. The son of Prince Henry of Battenberg and Princess Beatrice, he received a military education at Sandhurst and served as an officer in the King’s Royal Rifle Corps, reaching the rank of lieutenant shortly before the First World War. During the conflict, Maurice was deployed to the Ypres Salient, where he was killed in action on 27 October 1914. Regimental accounts state he was fatally struck by artillery fire while leading his company in an assault, and his death was mourned by senior commanders such as Douglas Haig. Buried in Ypres Town Cemetery, he was given a standard headstone by the Imperial War Graves Commission; his mother’s efforts for a personal memorial were unsuccessful due to the commission’s uniform burial practices. His life exemplified the role of British royal family members who took active command during the war and the personal cost of that service.
