A prince of the Imperial House of Japan, Takahito, Prince Mikasa, was a member of the imperial family and a public figure with a long academic and diplomatic career. Born into the Imperial House, he served as an officer in the Imperial Army during World War II, holding cavalry and staff positions in Nanjing and at the Imperial General Headquarters until 1945. After the conflict he devoted himself to study: he graduated in literature from the University of Tokyo and became a specialist in archaeology, Middle Eastern studies and Semitic languages, serving from 1954 as president of the Japan Society for Middle Eastern Studies and lecturing at universities in Japan and abroad.

He married Yuriko Takagi in 1941; they had five children, and he established a branch of the Imperial House, remaining active in official engagements and cultural initiatives. In 1958 he took part in the celebrations of the fiftieth anniversary of Japanese immigration to Brazil, visiting several cities and being received by local authorities.

Known for his longevity and public life, he remained until 2016 one of the oldest and most influential members of the imperial family, leaving an academic legacy and a reputation as a cultural interlocutor between Japan and the world.
