Aldegunda Maria of Bavaria was a Bavarian princess and, by marriage, Princess of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. Born into the Bavarian royal family, she was the daughter of King Ludwig III and Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria-Este, a position that placed her within the European dynastic circles of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
On 20 January 1915 she married Prince Wilhelm of Hohenzollern, becoming Princess Consort of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen until 1927. The marriage produced no children, and after her husband's death or abdication she retained the title of princess dowager until 1958.
Aldegunda’s life reflects the interconnections among European royal houses during a period of profound political change — the First World War and the fall of several monarchies altered the public and private roles of reigning families. Her historical significance lies chiefly in her dynastic position and the family ties she maintained among the houses of Bavaria, Hohenzollern and Austria-Este.
