Maria Ludwiga Theresia of Bavaria was a princess by birth, the daughter of Bavaria’s last king, Ludwig III, and Maria Theresa of Austria-Este. Connected to the high European nobility, her life became notable for her marriage to Prince Ferdinando Pio, Duke of Calabria, in Munich in 1897. The union strengthened ties between the royal houses of Bavaria and the Two Sicilies. With the dynastic succession of 1934, when Ferdinando Pio was recognized as head of the House of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, Maria Ludwiga Theresia became the titular queen consort of that branch. The title was chiefly honorific and symbolic, representing the continuity of dynastic traditions and claims of the former Neapolitan monarchy within the context of twentieth-century European royal families. The marriage produced several daughters and one son, among them individuals who followed varied marital paths within European and Latin American aristocracy. Maria Ludwiga Theresia’s life fits within the pattern of noble figures who, despite lacking direct political power, played a significant role in preserving familial networks, titles, and dynastic memories throughout the twentieth century.
