Mary Lilian Baels, known as Princess of Réthy, was a controversial figure in the Belgian royal family as the second wife of King Leopold III. Of British descent and the daughter of Henri Baels, she entered the royal circle after becoming the king’s golf partner; that relationship ended in a secret marriage in 1941 that provoked strong public and political reaction in Belgium. A later announcement made clear she would not be queen but princess, and that the couple’s children would have no succession rights. Her role in the royal circle was marked by rumors and tensions: later reports and diaries suggested a close relationship with the then crown prince Baudouin, a controversy that fueled criticism and political decisions about the couple’s residence during the postwar years. Social hostility toward her, described by parts of the press as that of a “social climber,” accompanied much of her public life. Lilian had three children with Leopold III and remained a public figure until her death in 2002. Buried in the royal tomb at Laeken, her legacy is ambivalent, caught between the status of princess and the memory of the discord that marked her marriage to the king.
