Maria José of Belgium (1906–2001) was a Belgian princess who became the last queen consort of Italy for a brief period in May–June 1946. A daughter of Albert I of Belgium and Elisabeth of Bavaria, she grew up at a court shaped by a liberal intellectual atmosphere, received a solid cultural education — including music, literature and sports such as mountaineering — and associated with prominent scientific and artistic figures of her time. She married Umberto of Savoy, heir to the Italian throne, in 1930; the marriage produced four children but was marked by marital distance and difficulties amid the political and social environment of Fascist Italy. During World War II, Maria José sought to act as an intermediary in attempts to negotiate a separate peace. With Umberto’s brief accession to the throne she became queen in May 1946; shortly afterward the family left Italy and the country became a republic. She spent much of her exile in Geneva, returning to Italy only decades later. She died in 2001 and was buried at Hautecombe Abbey, remembered for her cosmopolitan education, her role in the crises of the Italian monarchy and her public presence during the country’s historical transition.
