Louise Auguste of Denmark was a central figure in the Danish high nobility in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Officially the daughter of King Christian VII and Caroline Matilda, the widely held belief that her biological father was the physician Johann Friedrich Struensee did not undermine her court position; raised at court after Struensee’s fall, she maintained a close relationship with her brother, Crown Prince Frederick, and became a key player in dynastic affairs. She married in 1786 to Frederick Christian II, Duke of Augustenborg, a match arranged to strengthen ties between branches of the House of Oldenburg without threatening the throne. Widely regarded as the most influential woman at the Danish court, celebrated for her beauty and public presence—contemporaries called her the “Venus of Denmark”—she kept a literary and artistic salon that drew figures such as the poet Jens Baggesen. Politically, she showed sympathy for French revolutionary ideas and worked to defend the crown’s interests when disputes arose between her husband and the king. Widowed in 1814, she exercised strong control over the Augustenborg estates and over her children’s education, later establishing her own court at the local castle. Her cultural legacy includes portraits by Jens Juel and literary inspirations in Denmark; she is also an ancestor of contemporary European monarchs.
