Catherine de’ Medici was an Italian noblewoman who became Queen Consort of France (1547–1559) through her marriage to Henry II. Born into the powerful Medici family of Florence, her political authority expanded after her husband’s death, when she acted as regent and adviser to her sons who reigned: Francis II, Charles IX, and Henry III. In a century defined by civil wars and religious strife, Catherine initially pursued compromise with the French Protestants (Huguenots) but ultimately turned to repressive measures as violence escalated. Her name is often associated with some of the era’s darkest events, most notably the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre, though historians dispute how directly responsible she was. Outside politics, she was a major patron of the arts, employing cultural patronage to shore up the prestige of the declining Valois monarchy. Her legacy remains ambiguous: praised as a determined ruler who kept the dynasty intact in turbulent times, she has also been condemned for authoritarian and cruel decisions reflected in contemporary correspondence.
