Marie Adélaïde Clotilde Xavière, known as Clotilde, was a French princess who became queen consort of the Kingdom of Sardinia by marrying Charles Emmanuel IV. A granddaughter of Louis XV and sister of King Louis XVI, she was born and raised at the court of Versailles, where her education emphasized religion and virtue. Her Catholic devotion marked both her public and private life and shaped her role at the Sardinian court. Her marriage to Charles Emmanuel, arranged as part of dynastic ties between France and Savoy, brought her to Turin, where she won popular regard for her piety, moderation, and ability to mediate within the royal family. Despite concerns about her health and appearance, Clotilde gained a reputation as a conciliator and a figure of strict morality at court. During her husband's reign she was politically active and at times acted as de facto prime minister, taking part in decision‑making and governance. The couple’s family life was defined by mutual devotion and the absence of children. Her legacy is that of a devout and influential queen whose political and religious role left its mark on the Sardinian monarchy in the years before and during the European revolutions.
