Frederica Charlotte of Prussia was a Prussian princess, the only child of Frederick William II and Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick. Raised under the guardianship of Frederick the Great, she received education and affection at the court in Berlin, where she was admired for her liveliness, intelligence, and dignified manners. A childhood marked by family scandal shaped her into a reserved yet cultured public figure. In 1791 she married Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany, a son of King George III of the United Kingdom, in a union arranged for dynastic reasons. Welcomed warmly by the British royal family, especially Queen Charlotte, the duchess took an interest in political debate and London society, but the marriage soon proved unhappy and produced no children. After their separation, Frederica withdrew to Oatlands Park in Weybridge, where she lived eccentrically and became known for her affection for animals and domestic entertainments. She maintained a cordial relationship with the duke until his death in 1820, when she received public tribute in Weybridge. Her legacy is that of a cultivated and popular princess whose life illustrates the pressures and dynastic arrangements of the late eighteenth century.
