Margarete Beatrice Theodora of Prussia was a German princess connected to the highest royal houses of Europe. The youngest daughter of Emperor Frederick III and Princess Victoria, the British Queen Royal, she was raised amid great privilege and dynastic ties that made her a first cousin of monarchs such as George V and of the Russian Empress Alexandra Feodorovna. She married in 1893 Prince Frederick Charles of Hesse, with whom she had six children — including two sets of twins — and remained throughout her life a central figure in the House of Hesse. In 1918 her husband briefly accepted the throne of Finland, which would have made Margarete a queen consort; the title never materialized because of the outcome of the First World War. Her personal life was marked by tragedy: two sons were killed in action during the First World War and another died during the Second World War. Some of her descendants became involved with the Nazi regime, while another used his position to help Jews escape. Margarete retained management of estates she had inherited from her mother and maintained a reputation for a strong personality and very close family ties.
