Princess Marie Amelie of Baden was a German noblewoman noted for her ties across the European courts of the 19th century. The youngest daughter of Grand Duke Charles of Baden and Stéphanie de Beauharnais, she married in 1843 the marquess William Hamilton, the future Duke of Hamilton, and moved her life into the British aristocracy. As duchess, she divided her time between Scotland and residences on the Continent, carried out works at Brodick Castle, and took part in the social life of Baden‑Baden and Paris.
Her public role included close friendships with imperial figures: she was a cousin and friend of Napoleon III and his wife, Empress Eugénie, with whom she maintained social exchanges and extended hospitality on her estates. The duchess was also noted for local religious and philanthropic activities — she provided financial support for the founding and upkeep of a Catholic school in Hamilton and made donations to the parish church.
Widowed in 1863, she remained a recognized presence in European aristocracy, receiving visits from members of the British royal family and being regarded as a social hub in Baden‑Baden. Her descendants tied her to continental dynasties: her daughter Mary Victoria was the mother of the future Louis II of Monaco, leaving a dynastic legacy and a lasting place in the networks of power and influence of her era.
