Maria Pia of Savoy, known as Princess Maria Pia of Bourbon-Parma, is a member of the Italian royal family and a figure of twentieth-century European aristocracy. The eldest daughter of Humbert II, the last King of Italy, and Marie José of Belgium, her life reflects the political and dynastic shifts of the post-monarchical period in Europe.
In 1955 she married Prince Alexander of Yugoslavia; the marriage produced numerous children, including two sets of twins, and placed her within the network of Balkan royal houses. The marriage ended in divorce in 1967. In 2003 she married Prince Michel of Bourbon-Parma, thus joining the broader web of European royal kinship.
Over the decades she has retained princely titles associated with the houses of Savoy, Yugoslavia and Bourbon-Parma, and is chiefly remembered for her role in connecting dynasties and for her presence at dynastic and social events.
