Princess Patricia of Connaught, born Victoria Patricia Helena Elizabeth, was a member of the British royal family and a granddaughter of Queen Victoria. Known familiarly as Patsy, she became a public figure in the early 20th century, accompanying her father during his term as Governor General of Canada (1911–1916) and winning widespread popularity there — her portrait even appeared on a Canadian one‑dollar note in 1917. In 1918 she was named colonel‑in‑chief of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, a regiment privately raised by Andrew Hamilton Gault; she maintained an active relationship with the unit throughout her life, designing its badge and taking part in official events. In 1919 she married Alexander Ramsay at Westminster Abbey and, by royal warrant, relinquished the style “Her Royal Highness,” thereafter being known as Lady Patricia Ramsay, while remaining a member of the royal family and attending dynastic ceremonies. Beyond her public duties, she distinguished herself as a watercolor artist and was an honorary member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, producing works influenced by travels to tropical regions and by post‑Impressionist currents. She died in 1974 and was buried in the Royal Burial Ground at Frogmore, leaving a legacy tied both to Canadian military service and to cultural life and consistent participation in royal family activities.
