Maria Luisa of Hanover and Cumberland belonged to the high European nobility of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, descending from the royal houses of Hanover and Denmark. A daughter of Crown Prince Ernest Augustus of Hanover and a maternal granddaughter of King Christian IX, her genealogy placed her within the most influential dynastic circles of the era, linking her to British and German monarchies. In 1900 she married Prince Maximilian of Baden, a member of the German nobility tied to the court of Baden. The union reinforced ties between royal houses and produced two children who remained present in European aristocratic circles: Maria Alexandra of Baden and Berthold, Margrave of Baden, the latter married to a sister of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Throughout her life, Maria Luisa fulfilled the traditional role of a dynastic princess, acting primarily through marital alliances that reflected the family-network politics of reigning houses. Her legacy is principally genealogical: through her descendants and connections, she helped interlink dynasties that remained relevant in the following decades.
