Princess Marie of Hanover was a member of the royal House of Hanover, the youngest daughter of King George V of Hanover and Marie of Saxe-Altenburg. Born in Hanover, she retained the style of Her Royal Highness in the Kingdom of Hanover and Her Highness in the United Kingdom, by virtue of her direct descent from George III. The loss of the family throne in 1866 marked her youth: the family remained at Marienburg for more than a year and, in 1867, went into exile in Austria, settling in Gmunden. In this context of dynastic displacement, Marie maintained a courtly life and did not marry. In the 1870s she was courted by Prince Arthur but refused his proposal, saying she did not reciprocate his feelings—an episode that drew unfavorable comment among relatives. Her refusal and decision to remain single shaped her personal life, in step with the political decline of her house. Marie died in Gmunden at the age of 54 and was buried in the family mausoleum at Schloss Cumberland, beside her mother. Her life reflects the dynastic tensions of the nineteenth century and the impact of exile on European princesses.
