Victoria of Hesse and by Rhine (Victoria Alberta Elisabeth Mathilde Marie) was a princess of the House of Hesse and, by marriage, Marchioness of Milford Haven. A granddaughter of Queen Victoria, she played a significant role as a member of the European royal family: she acted as a mediator in family matters and maintained close correspondence with her grandmother until the latter’s death. She married in 1884 to Louis Mountbatten (then Battenberg) and had four children, among them Queen Louise of Sweden and Louis Mountbatten, the future Viceroy of India. After settling in the United Kingdom, she devoted herself to local studies during periods on the island of Malta and attended court events such as her sister Alexandra’s coronation. During the First World War the family changed their surname to Mountbatten and withdrew from public office because of anti‑German sentiment. Victoria also provided family support in later crises: she organized the return and burial of the remains of relatives executed in Russia and became guardian of her grandson Philip when her daughter Alice was institutionalized. Widowed in 1921, she spent much of her life at Kensington Palace, maintaining a discreet influence over her descendants. She died in 1950 and left memoirs published posthumously; her legacy is chiefly the interweaving of European royal families and her behind‑the‑scenes role in dynastic life.
