Princess of Parma Maria Antonia Giuseppa Walburga Anna Luisa (1774–1841) was a member of the Bourbon-Parma dynasty and an Infanta of Spain. The daughter of Duke Ferdinando I and Archduchess Maria Amalia of Austria, she was raised at the ducal court among palaces and summer residences and received an artistic education: she distinguished herself in painting under the direction of local teachers and the celebrated Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, and her portraits are displayed in the ducal chapel of San Rocco. Maria Antonia’s life was shaped by the revolutionary crisis that swept Europe at the end of the eighteenth century. During Napoleon’s invasion of the Duchy of Parma she remained close to her family, endured the hardships of siege and exile, and accompanied their transfer to Prague; only after Napoleon’s decline did each sister follow her own path, and Maria Antonia gradually settled into religious life. At the beginning of the nineteenth century she chose a monastic vocation: in 1803 she entered the Ursulines with the religious name Luigia Maria. She managed conventual affairs — including the clock tower of the Ursuline convent in Parma — and spent her final years in Rome at the Convent of Sant’Agata, devoted to contemplative life and charitable works until her death. According to her wishes, she was buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria della Steccata.
