Alexandra of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1878–1942) was a princess born into the dynasty that connected the British, Russian and German royal houses. The daughter of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia, she belonged to a generation that strengthened dynastic ties among European monarchies and was sister to figures such as Queen Marie of Romania. She married in 1896 Crown Prince Ernst of Hohenlohe-Langenburg; the marriage produced five children and kept Alexandra within the sphere of Germany’s minor mediatized nobility. After her father’s death in 1900, her husband served as regent in Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and Alexandra settled permanently in Germany, where she spent most of her life. During the First World War she served as a Red Cross nurse, a role common among aristocratic women of the period. In the following decades she, along with most of her children, participated in the German nationalist movement and joined the National Socialist Party in 1937. She died in Schwäbisch Hall in 1942. Her legacy is primarily dynastic: descendants linked to several European royal houses and a life that moved from transnational dynastic ties to the political and social realities of early twentieth-century Germany.
