Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha was a princess of German–British origin who moved among European courts at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. A granddaughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and Emperor Alexander II of Russia, she became Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine through marriage in 1894; that union ended in divorce in 1901 and provoked scandal within royal families. Her personal life reflected the dynastic and religious tensions of the era: she fell in love with a Russian cousin, first married a German relative under family pressure, and years later formalized a union with Grand Duke Kirill Vladimirovich. When she married a second time, the couple was initially banished from the Russian court for lacking imperial approval; they later returned to Russia, and Victoria converted to Orthodoxy, taking the name Victoria Feodorovna. After the fall of the monarchy in 1917 she lived in exile—passing through Finland, Germany and France—and took part in the counter-revolutionary milieu that led Kirill to claim the title of exiled czar in 1926. Known in the family as “Ducky,” Victoria played a representational role within European dynastic networks, and her legacy recalls the complex ties among personal relationships, religion and monarchical politics in the pre- and post-revolutionary Russian period.
