Teodora Victoria Augusta Maria Mariana of Saxe-Meiningen was a German princess, the only child of Duke Bernhard III of Saxe-Meiningen and Princess Charlotte of Prussia, a maternal granddaughter of Crown Prince Frederick of Prussia and a great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. She was raised in an aristocratic environment, often in the care of her maternal grandmother, who supervised her education and had reservations about the family upbringing she received. In 1898 she married Prince Heinrich XXX of Reuss, an army officer; the match reflected both social expectations and Teodora’s personal desire to escape a lonely childhood. The marriage involved frequent moves between garrisons and engagement in cultural and philanthropic activities while Heinrich carried out his military duties. Teodora’s adult life was marked by chronic health problems and unsuccessful attempts to conceive, which led to multiple medical interventions. During the First World War she organized and ran a small hospital for wounded soldiers. Her life illustrates the tensions between dynastic duties, personal limitations, and the role of high nobility women at the end of the German Empire.
