Princess Helena Victoria (Victoria Louise Sophia Augusta Amelia Helena) was an active member of the British royal family and a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, known for her dedication to public service and social work. Raised between Frogmore and the royal courts, she received a strict education and was influenced by her mother’s practices in nursing and care, which guided her commitment to charitable institutions throughout her life. During the First World War she coordinated and chaired initiatives supporting the troops and women, including the establishment of the YWCA Women’s Auxiliary Force, and visited British forces in France, overseeing entertainment and relief programs. Between the wars she and her sister acted as patrons of the arts, supporting London’s musical scene. Despite marriage proposals and dynastic ties to German houses, she remained single and held positions of trust within the royal household, serving as companion and private secretary to Queen Victoria in the queen’s final years. After 1917 she officially adopted the British princely style, reflecting her predominantly British identity. She remained publicly active into old age and was remembered for her charity work, service to the monarchy and representational roles; she died in 1948 and was buried in the Royal Burial Ground at Frogmore.
