Princess Aiko, formally known as Princess Toshi, is a member of the Imperial House of Japan and the only child of Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako. Her given name uses the characters for “love” and “child,” and the title Toshi reflects the concept of respect; both were chosen by her parents, a practice that broke with family tradition. As a woman, Aiko is excluded from the line of succession to the throne under current law, an issue that has prompted extensive public and political debate in recent decades. Aiko completed her secondary education at Gakushuin Girls’ School and entered the Department of Japanese Language and Literature at Gakushuin University in 2020. She has pursued artistic interests from an early age, particularly bowed string instruments—especially the cello—alongside calligraphy, sports and poetry. During her youth her schooling was followed closely by the media and the Imperial Household, including periods away from public duties for health and wellbeing reasons. Aiko’s public appearances follow the ceremonial protocols of the imperial family; upon turning 20 she received the collar of the Order of the Precious Crown and took part in traditional rites. Her life combines ceremonial duties, academic studies and cultural activities, placing her within contemporary discussions about succession and the public role of the imperial family.
