Prince Wilhelm of Prussia was a member of the Hohenzollern royal house known for his role in the transition from the imperial monarchy to republican Germany in the 20th century. Born in 1906 as a grandson of Kaiser Wilhelm II, he grew up with dynastic expectations that disappeared after the 1918 abdication; he nevertheless maintained institutional ties to military and academic traditions, studying in Königsberg, Munich and Bonn. During the Weimar Republic he became involved in public controversies — one notable episode occurred when he took part in military maneuvers wearing the imperial uniform, a stunt that had political repercussions and contributed to the resignation of the Reichswehr commander. In the 1920s and 1930s he joined traditional student corps and, in 1933, formally renounced his succession rights to marry Dorothea von Salviati in a union initially considered morganatic; the marriage was later recognized as dynastic and produced two daughters. At the start of the Second World War he enlisted in the Wehrmacht and was killed in action during the invasion of France in May 1940. His death caused widespread public emotion and prompted Nazi measures to restrict participation by members of former royal houses in the armed forces, reflecting the ambiguous and contested role of the defeated monarchy in contemporary Germany.
