A prince of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, Pétros was a singular figure among twentieth-century European royalty: a soldier, aristocrat and anthropologist. The son of Prince George of Greece and Denmark and the writer and psychoanalyst Princess Marie Bonaparte, he graduated in law in Paris and pursued anthropological studies at the London School of Economics with Bronisław Malinowski and Raymond Firth.
In the 1930s he undertook expeditions to the southern and northern parts of the Indian subcontinent, where he focused on Tibetan culture and, in particular, polyandrous practices—work that earned him academic recognition and institutional invitations. His scientific activity ran in parallel with a controversial personal life: he married Irina Ovtchinnikova, a union that removed him from the Greek line of succession and drew family disapproval.
During World War II he served in the Greek army as an officer and, after the conflict, returned to Asia several times to continue his ethnographic research. Childless, he died in London; he is remembered as a rare example of a prince-scientist whose fieldwork broadened European knowledge of Tibetan societies and marital practices that had received little study at the time.
