Clemens Wenceslaus (Clemens Wenzeslaus August Hubertus Franz Xaver) was a prince of the House of Wettin who became prominent as Archbishop-Elector of Trier in the late 18th century. A son of Elector Augustus III of Poland, he combined ecclesiastical office with secular responsibilities, moved his residence to Koblenz, and promoted public and cultural works that shaped the electorate. During his rule he built and renovated palaces, boosted musical life — opening a theater with a Mozart opera in 1787 — and carried out urban improvements such as water supply works and public fountains. He also invested in the thermal development of Bertrich, seeking to revive the local economy through spa tourism. In social and educational matters he adopted measures inspired by Enlightenment ideas: he supported public education, founded charitable institutions, and issued an edict of tolerance in 1783. In religious affairs he maintained moderate and conservative positions, preserving certain orders and restricting popular practices he regarded as superstitious. His legacy is that of a prince-bishop who modernized infrastructure, fostered the arts, and implemented administrative and educational reforms in the Electorate of Trier, balancing courtly prestige with concerns for public welfare.
