Prince of Asturias Felipe Próspero was the firstborn son of Philip IV of Spain and Mariana of Austria, born amid high dynastic expectations during a period of Spanish political decline. His birth in 1657 temporarily eased the succession crisis that followed the death of Balthasar Charles and affected diplomatic negotiations—such as those leading to the Treaty of the Pyrenees—by allowing the Spanish crown to secure more favorable dynastic arrangements. Despite the hopes placed on him, Felipe Próspero was fragile from early childhood; amulets and religious ministrations accompany his image in his brief life, as reflected in Velázquez’s famous 1659 portrait, which shows signs of both protective rites and illness. The painting records both the affection for the child and an awareness of the physical ailments that afflicted him. Chronic illness and epileptic episodes marked his short life; he died in 1661 as a child. His death reopened succession questions within the House of Habsburg and helped perpetuate dynastic struggles in seventeenth-century Spain.
