Prince René of Bourbon-Parma was a member of the royal family of Parma, son of Duke Robert I and Maria Antónia of Braganza. Belonging to a dynasty with strong European ties — among his siblings were Empress Zita of Austria and Prince Félix of Luxembourg — René lived a life shaped by mobility and the crises of the twentieth century. Trained as a military officer, he served as a volunteer with Finnish forces during World War II and, in the postwar period, faced financial difficulties that forced the family to seek refuge and emigrate, living for periods in France, Spain, Portugal and, finally, the United States. A French citizen by family choice, he sought to secure his children’s nationality by moving the family to Paris. He married in 1921 Princess Margaret of Denmark, with whom he had several children, including Prince Jacques and Queen Anne of Romania. René’s biography combines the traditional role of a European prince — dynastic alliances and military service — with the political and personal contingencies of his time, leaving a legacy chiefly in his family branches and in the historical memory of the high European nobility.
