Augusta Frederica of Great Britain was a British princess, granddaughter of George II and the elder sister of King George III. In 1764 she married Charles I, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, an arranged union for dynastic purposes that took her to live at the German court, although she continued to cultivate strong English ties and preferences. As duchess, Augusta became known for preserving typically British habits and tastes within a German courtly environment, even commissioning a retreat called Schloss Richmond as a reminder of England. Her relations with her husband’s family and with Queen Charlotte were marked by tensions and rivalries of etiquette, which affected her relationship with the British court during visits to London. In private life she devoted herself to the education of her children and to religious study, gradually withdrawing from public life. Her daughter Caroline later became queen consort of the United Kingdom, helping to reinforce the dynastic link between Brunswick and the British royal family. Augusta’s legacy is chiefly that of a princess with transnational ties who maintained identities and family networks between Great Britain and the German states.
