Philipp Friedrich Alexander, 1st Prince of Eulenburg and Hertefeld and Count of Sandels, was a central figure in the diplomacy and court of the German Empire at the turn of the 20th century. Born into a Junker family with a long tradition of service to the Hohenzollerns, he trained in law and moved from the judicial career into the diplomatic service, holding important posts in Paris, Munich, Oldenburg and Stuttgart, and serving as ambassador in Vienna from 1893 to 1902. In 1900 he received princely and comital titles that cemented his aristocratic standing.

With the accession of Wilhelm II, Eulenburg became an intimate confidant of the Kaiser and exercised unofficial influence over appointments and political decisions — including his recommendation of Bernhard von Bülow for a ministerial post. His career illustrates the interweaving of court networks and imperial diplomacy during the period of German power consolidation.

Eulenburg’s public notoriety widened with the 1907 scandal, in which allegations about his private life involving members of the Kaiser’s circle led to legal proceedings and irreparable damage to his position at court. His legacy is ambivalent: acknowledged for his diplomatic role and closeness to Wilhelm II, he is also remembered for controversies that exposed social and political tensions within the German Empire.
