German prince of the House of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, Gottfried (1897–1960) was head of his family from 1950 until his death. The son and heir of Ernst II, he received military training during the First World War and later studied and worked in economics and finance, holding positions in banks and international companies in the 1920s and 1930s. He married Princess Margaret of Greece in 1931, with whom he had several children; episodes from his private life drew international press attention in the 1930s. In 1937 he joined the National Socialist Party, which also included close relatives, and served in the Wehrmacht, taking part in the annexation of Austria and later on the Eastern Front, where he was seriously wounded. After the war he briefly held local administrative posts and, upon succeeding his father, managed substantial family estates — farmland, forests and two castles. Focused on the region’s economic development, he engaged in tourism initiatives and founded an import company for timber to diversify income. He also presided over the Automobile Club of Germany from 1953 to 1960. His legacy combines estate management and a local public role, complicated by the controversy of his affiliation with the Nazi regime in the 1930s and 1940s.
