Prince of the House of Hohenzollern‑Sigmaringen, Leopold held a significant position in the dynastic and military affairs of nineteenth‑century Europe. A career soldier, he rose to senior ranks in the Prussian army and was active in relations between Catholic courts and the German states, following his family’s tradition. He married Infanta Antónia of Portugal, strengthening dynastic ties with the Iberian royal houses.
His proposed nomination for the throne of Mexico and—more decisively—the offer of the Spanish candidacy after the fall of Isabella II placed him at the center of a diplomatic crisis. The episode of his Spanish candidacy, broadly supported by Bismarck and viewed unfavorably by Napoleon III, became one of the sparks of the Franco‑Prussian War, an event that reshaped the European political map and led to the proclamation of the German Empire.
In 1885 he succeeded his father as Prince of Hohenzollern‑Sigmaringen and served as head of the house until his death in 1905. Known for preserving and restoring the family estates—most notably rebuilding Sigmaringen Castle after a fire—he left a legacy tied both to dynastic politics and to his family’s integration into the new structures of the German state.
