William V of Nassau, who styled himself Willem Batavus, was the last Prince of Orange to serve as stadtholder of the United Provinces. He became stadtholder and captain‑general of the army in 1766 and maintained a pro‑British political stance, which brought him into conflict with the rising Patriot faction that demanded reforms and greater popular influence. His marriage to Wilhelmina of Prussia tied him to the Prussian and British monarchies, shaping foreign interventions in Dutch internal conflicts.

In the closing decades of the eighteenth century, attempts at commercial neutrality and events such as the Fourth Anglo‑Dutch War undermined his authority. The incident involving the detention of his wife in 1787 precipitated a Prussian intervention against the Patriots, but the outbreak of the French Revolution and the advance of French troops reversed the situation: in 1795 William V was driven into exile in England and the Batavian Republic replaced the old order.

He died in exile in 1806; his dynasty, however, was not extinguished: in 1813 his son returned and became the first sovereign of the restored Dutch monarchy, inaugurating the reign of the House of Orange‑Nassau.
