Pedro de Alcântara Francisco António João, known as Prince of Brazil Pedro, was a member of the Portuguese royal house as the second son of King João V and Queen Maria Anna of Austria. As a male he became the heir presumptive and was formally proclaimed Prince of Brazil, holding by dynastic right the crown’s traditional titles such as Duke of Bragança and Marquis of Vila Viçosa. His birth in 1712 was celebrated with pomp by the court and the city of Lisbon, with religious ceremonies led by high dignitaries and festive popular participation; he was baptized with an extensive set of names honoring saints and imperial relatives, with Emperor Charles VI and Infanta Francisca Josefa serving as godparents. He died prematurely at the age of two, in 1714, in the same palace where he was born; the causes are not documented. The queen expressed profound mourning and ordered that her son be buried with religious identification linked to the Society of Jesus. Pedro is interred in the pantheon of the House of Bragança. His death altered the line of succession: the title Prince of Brazil passed to his younger brother, the future King Joseph I, marking a brief but significant episode in the succession chronology of early-18th-century Portugal.
